Robert L. Davis stepped down as Commander of Dorie Miller Post #915 in May 2009
only to step up to lead the Post’s newly implemented 501c3 entity. He was
elected to the position of Housing Chairman in June 2009. Davis was very
influential in overseeing the housing committee operations as commander of the
Post during 2006, 2007, & 2008. |
|
 |
|
Davis sat on the housing committee as an ad hoc member, spearheading the process
to implement by-laws for the 501c3 arm of the Post throughout his three year
term as commander. He took on the responsibility to become the liaison between
the Post and the IRS, making numerous trips to the IRS and Secretary of State
offices, making certain that this course of action was accomplished. “His
dedication and involvement in the 501c3 application process from start to
finish, certainly makes Davis a perfect candidate for Board Chairman”, said Fred
Gafeney, the newly elected Vice Chairman. “His passion to help veterans in
Chicago is genuine”, is a sentiment echoed by another member of the Housing
Committee. |
 |
|
Robert Davis retired a second time from the United States Army in 2007. His
initial retirement in 2003 was short lived when the First Sergeant was asked to
come back to the 330th Medical Brigade in Ft. Sheridan, Illinois. He obliged
with a four year re-enlistment. |
 |
|
Now completely retired from the United States Armed Forces, Davis promises as
the new Chairman of the Housing Committee to get busy with grant writing. The
goal of the grants is to begin raising funds to build an American Legion Post
#915 in honor of one of the greatest WWII heroes that fought and died for our
country, Doris “Dorie” Miller. |
 |
|
In establishing the programs for the 501c3 entity, the members of Post #915
focused on the basic principles of the American Legion. The commitment the
Legion has to Veterans, Youth and Community is unprecedented in Veteran
organizations. Chairman Davis promises that this body of veteran’s will become
more powerful in the communities within the third district, first division of
the Department of Illinois. “It is time to shift gears again”, Davis said. “We
have our 501c3 and we must shift that same momentum towards building a Legion
hall for Post #915.” |
 |
|
Davis wants everyone to remember that a veteran is someone who, at one point in
his life, wrote a blank check made payable to "The United States of America",
for an amount of "up to and including my life." That is honor, and we must not
forget. |

In 2004, we lost our temporary American Legion Post
housing facility. Since, we have been on a major crusade
to move out of temporary housing at the Richard L. Jones
Armory and into a new Legion Hall. As one the largest
American Legion Post in the state of Illinois—we do not
have a Legion Post to run the Legion programs for our
members, their family and friends in our community. Our
goal is to make certain that this large group of Chicago
area Veterans that has proudly worn the uniform to
protect and support this country in combat—be afforded
the privilege of a new Post home. |
 |
|

The Housing Committee’s signature fundraiser is held
annually on November 10th. The event has grown in patron
support and attendance since our inaugural event, 10
November 2004. In 2007 and 2008, the Honorable Richard
M. Daley proclaimed 10 November as Dorie Miller Day in
Chicago in recognition of the work the Post is doing in
the communities we represent; to recognize the Post for
our Annual Veterans Day Benefit; and for our ongoing
initiative to make sure that we support the adoption of
legislation creating a Congressionally-mandated Navy
board to review the complete record of Dorie Miller, USN,
for the purpose of posthumously awarding him the Medal
of Honor. Governor Pat Quinn (D-IL) has served as one of
the benefit’s Honorary Chairman’s for 2 consecutive
years. |
